The Prototype of the World’s Most Powerful Short-Range Heavy-Duty Electric Truck

Monday, August 30th, 2010

In 2007, the Port of Los Angeles and South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD) partnered to fund the prototype of the world’s most powerful short-range heavy-duty electric truck. The agencies split the $527,000 investment to develop and test a heavy-duty truck capable of hauling a fully loaded 40-foot cargo container.
The heavy-duty electric short-haul drayage truck — the first of its kind at any port worldwide — can pull a 60,000-pound cargo container, has a top speed of 40 mph, and has a range between 30 to 60 miles per battery charge. The battery power plants on up to four electric trucks can be simultaneously charged within four hours.
In April 2008, the Los Angeles Harbor Commission approved the production of 20 electric yard trucks, or “hostlers,” following the successful completion of the cargo terminal tests. The 20 hostlers will be deployed in the Port as part of a “green terminal” program. The program will also include the production of five on-road electric models. Balqon will work with the Port and Department of Transportation to obtain the appropriate certification for on-road use. In total, the Port is investing more than $5.6 million to test the viability of electric drayage trucks. Future widespread application of a fleet of electric trucks would be especially useful at the Port of Los Angeles because each year more than 4 million 20-foot-equivalent cargo container units (TEUs) are trucked to and from rail facilities and warehouses within 25 miles from the Port.
The Port of Los Angeles is America’s premier port and has a strong commitment to developing innovative strategic and sustainable operations that benefit the economy as well as the quality of life for the region and the nation it serves. As the leading seaport in North America in terms of shipping container volume and cargo value, the Port generates 919,000 regional jobs and $39.1 billion in annual wages and tax revenues. A proprietary department of the City of Los Angeles, the Port is self-supporting and does not receive taxpayer dollars. The Port of Los Angeles – A cleaner port. A brighter future.

Trucking Industry Features More Advancements in Technology

Sunday, August 29th, 2010

In a recent FixonRoad.com™ blog entry, it was reported that tractor trailer and body makers have been increasing spending on research and development to advance truck parts and truck products to improve efficiency.

Steerable Axles Truck Parts

Powered steerable axles are in the works as well. These innovative truck parts allow long box trailers to go where they were unable to go before and should also reduce truck repair and service due to less wear and tear.

Here is some more information about advancements in the trucking industry aimed at improving the trucking industry as a whole.  A new hybrid dump trailer is on the way and if it passes the truck testing standards – it may start production later this year.

The state of the art designed flat/half-round profile will yield 2 cubic yards more volume than a traditional straight half-round trailer of the same length.  It also weighs a lot less.

Powered steerable axles are in the works as well.  These innovative truck parts allow long box trailers to go where they were unable to go before and should also reduce truck repair and service due to less wear and tear.  Also, the chip trailers carry wood waste from left over timber cutting and transport it to co-generation plants to assist in the production of electricity.

Trailers are being modified to be more stable.  Tandem trailers feature all wheels of the truck remaining on the ground while the trailer rises.  This trucking modification makes the trailer more stable during tipping than other trucks whose forward axles rise with the body.

Truck Parts Technology

Makers of semi trailers are using lightweight materials such as plastic and aluminum in their truck parts to reduce weight and cost.

Many tractor trailer and body makers spend time and money in research and development.  Their goal is to create advanced truck parts and products with the goal of improving efficiency in the truck repair service industry.  Ultimately, this will save money for consumers of truck parts and services.  Currently, tractor trailer orders are increasing to carry the load of the increase in the amounts of freight being shipped. Freightliners are going to continue to be in high demand.

There is a need for improved trucking equipment such as refrigerated trailers, low rolling resistance tires and solar truck roofs.

Truck parts manufacturers have been showcasing their latest trucking designs at truck shows. Other trucking companies hold press conferences and other truck companies use the internet to gain attention to their new truck parts and products.

Makers of semi trailers are using lightweight materials such as plastic and aluminum in their truck parts to reduce weight and cost.  Aluminum frames with polyethylene plastic sheeting are used to reduce weight.  Less weight means that the trucks use less fuel and save more money.

New Truck or Repair Old Truck

Sometimes it may cost more to refurbish the old tractor trailer, freightliner, bus, recreational vehicle (RV) or reefer than to just purchase a new one.

Whether you own one tractor trailer, freightliner, bus, recreational vehicle (RV) or reefer – or an entire fleet of trucks, there comes a time when one must decide whether it is more cost effective to repair the vehicles or to buy new ones.  Part of this decision making process involves the cost and quality of your Truck Repair Service of choice.  In addition to Truck Repair Service fees, you also must consider the cost of Truck Parts.  Another option to think about is to purchase used trucks, but then you may have to deal with other headaches if the trucks were not serviced or maintained properly.  Then factor in the cost of purchasing a new truck and now you can make your decision.

Smith Electric Vehicles to Build Electric Trucks in Kansas City

Sunday, August 22nd, 2010

Company officials at the UK-based Smith Electric Vehicles announced on Friday that they will begin manufacturing “The world’s largest battery-electric-powered truck” at a new plant in Kansas City, Missouri.
The battery-powered Newton will be the first vehicle to be produced at the new plant, but starting next year, the plant will manufacture an electric version of the new Transit Connect light-duty vehicle in collaboration with made by Ford Motor Co.

The Newton cruises at a top speed of 50mph, carries payloads up to eight tons and can last up to 150 miles on a single charge. The Newton also has a wheelbase of 3.9 meters and a turning radius of 14.15 meters, allowing it to make tight turns and making it ideal for urban applications.
Available in a range of body styles to meet specific customer needs, the Newton can even be fully refrigerated.

According to manufacturers, the Newton is perfectly suited for “depot-based fleets, engaged in lower-mileage, multi-drop collection intra-city operations on congested roads.” In short, don’t expect these to be taking the place of 18-wheel tractor trailers, but do expect to see them being used as delivery vehicles, logistics vehicles in and around airports, and as service vehicles around town.

The Kansas City location was one of several vying for the new plant, but the $3 million in tax incentives for Smith from the state of Missouri helped seal the deal.
Company officials said the new facility would create 200 green collar jobs within three years, with the first round of new hires receiving a starting wage of $44,236 annually.

The company hopes to begin rolling Newtowns out of the new Kansas City plant by the third quarter of 2009.
