Need Truck Transmission Repairs? How Well Do You Know Your Truck’s Transmission?

Thursday, October 21st, 2010

Truck Transmission ServiceHow well do you know your truck’s transmission?  Trucks, semis, tractor trailers, 18 wheelers, big rigs, reefers, low boys and freightliners usually have manual transmissions.  Truckers prefer manual transmissions because they allow the driver to have more control of the trucks.  Nowadays, truck manufacturers also offer semi-automatic transmissions and fully automatic transmissions as well.

In the past, trucks often had twin gearshifts, generally with 4 or 5 ratios on main shift and 3 or 4 ratios on the auxiliary shift.  For the most part, semi-truck transmissions provide approximately nine or ten gear ratios.  Semi-trucks can provide up to eighteen gears.  The more gears a truck has – the finer the control of braking – especially in downhill situations and dramatic curves.

On semi-trucks with constant mesh transmission a clutch brake is required to stop the rotation of the gears.  This feature allows trucks to be put into gear without worry about gears grinding when trucks are stationary.

If your truck needs roadside assistance due to transmission problems, be sure to visit our comprehensive Truck Repair / Road Assistance Service Providers

Truck Air Brake Service: Roadside Assistance Directory

Tuesday, October 19th, 2010

Truck Air Brake Repair ServiceMaintaining truck brakes is crucial to limiting the number of truck safety hazards and accidents.  Roadside assistance and mobile truck repair services for truck brake repairs are common.  To help reduce the number of truck brake-related issues, the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance, and organization in the trucking industry instituted “Brake Safety Week” in which truck air brakes were checked for problems and out-of-service defects.

The Operation Air Brake campaign is part of an ongoing effort of an international truck and bus brake safety program that is focused on the improvement of commercial vehicle brake safety across North America. The Brake Safety Week occurred during the week of September 12-18 at locations across North America.

Over 30,000 trucks and buses including 18 wheelers, tractor trailers, low boys, reefers, semi-trucks, recreational vehicles, freightliners and heavy haulers were inspected during Truck Brake Safety Week.

Just under 10% of the trucks that were inspected were placed out of service for brake adjustments.  Another 8% of the trucks were placed out of service for brake components.  Nearly 15% of the trucks inspected were placed out of service for brakes.

Just imagine all of the accidents that were prevented due to the identification of faulty truck brakes during this truck air brake campaign.  It is safe to estimate that several trucks would have needed roadside mobile repair services if not for this safety campaign.

Truck Legislation Proposed to Help Trucking Industry

Saturday, October 9th, 2010

Truck Dealers and those in the truck repair industry just got some good news!  Congress is planning to repeal the 12% federal excise tax on heavy trucks & trailers.  It may be replaced with a 7.3-cents-per-gallon diesel tax increase.

Truck Repair DirectoryThe Heavy Truck Fairness Act supports that idea that new trucks have significant environmental and safety advantages.  This should move Congress to reduce the current barriers to new truck acquisition.

The bill should work to stimulate financial investments in related truck technologies. In addition to taxing trucks, tractors and trailers – there will also be revisions to safety technologies such as truck rollover prevention systems and truck forward collision and lane departure warning systems.

The latest tractor trailers, heavy haulers, freightliners, low boys, reefers and semi trucks are designed to increase fuel efficiency and reduce emissions.  This improved truck technology also would be present in trailer aerodynamics and lighter-weight tractors and trailers.

The Obama administration maintains that it is for legislation that will help the trucking industry, and has taken a stance against any increases in the fuel tax.
